Whenever we want to get details of a file or folder such as file type, size, date of creation, owner, etc, we open its "Properties" window and get the desired details. We also access file or folder's properties window to change its attributes such as read-only, hidden, etc.

"Properties" window of a file or folder also contains an extra tab called "Security". This tab allows you to change owner of the file or folder. It also allows you to modify permissions such as full control or limited control over the selected file or folder as shown in following tutorial:

Sometimes you may want to restrict users from changing ownership or permissions for any file or folder in Windows. In other words, you may want to completely remove "Security" tab from file and folder properties window so that no one can change security settings of any file or folder in your computer system.

Recently similar question was asked by our reader "Mohamed Nabil". He wanted to restrict "Security" tab from properties of all file and folders in Windows.

Today in this tutorial we are going to share a simple Registry tweak which will allow you to disable "Security" tab in files and folders properties windows as shown in following screenshot:

If you also want to remove "Security" tab from files and folders properties window, just check out following simple steps:

1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

3. In right-side pane, create a new DWORD NoSecurityTab and set its value to 1

That's it. It'll immediately remove "Security" tab from all files and folders properties window. If it doesn't remove the tab, you can log off, restart your system or end task of Explorer.

4. In future whenever you want to re-enable "Security" tab, simply change the value of NoSecurityTab to 0 or delete the DWORD.

This method will work in all Windows versions such as Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

Can a restricted user (i.e., one for who the Security tab has been removed), but who has access to regedit, reset the NoSecurityTab value to 0?

^^ Both DWORDs are used to make the process of resolving a shortcut faster. They prevent the system from searching the drive and using NTFS tracking feature.

You are annoyed by some unknown application popping up wherever you go, asking you to click, forcing to visit. Funny thing is that you are completely clueless how it got installed. Moreover, it isn’t easy to uninstall or remove or even disable it.

Some names of this kind of potentially unwanted programs could be Bablylon, Incredibar, iLivid, MyWebSearch, Conduit, MyRally.io, Ask Toolbar, Facemoods or Funmoods and so on…

Truth is that these applications are installed by none other than YOU. Yes, they didn’t install automatically. It was because of your ignorance. Your one Click could have prevented installation of unwanted toolbar or program.

I may have written tutorials on how to remove them individually which included removing deeply located files and registry keys. In this post however, I am introducing a tiny tool which can remove most popular unwanted programs automatically.

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) is a tool which will search your system for any adwares, potentially unwanted programs (PUP) and remove them from roots.

I tested it on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 infected with:

DealPlySweet IMSmart BarPrice GongiLivid

It removed all of them along with some more which I didn’t even know about namely SweetPack and Fun Web Products. Complete log of the tool actions is given below:

JRT Log File

JRT has a command line interface but don’t panic, no command input is needed as such. Just a confirmation of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ to start searching and uninstalling these annoying programs.

Remove common adware and Toolbars

Tool has a database of popular adware and it knows where they keep their installation files. It automatically searches for possible threats, you do not even have to know or specify a name. They just get cleaned up!

Some of these adware things are so annoying – I had one plaguing my browser and McAfee couldn’t do a thing about it. Often you just have to go in there and remove them yourself and hope for the best. I’ve since ditched McAfee as they’re no good, and taken to using Windows Defender for the Windows 8.1 OS. This has been entirely problem free. No complaints!

Media files are often encrypted to prevent copying and unfair usage, this is made possible using Digital Rights Management. Often, these DRM things become irritation for users due to various restrictions like Device binding, Playback, copying, etc.

DRM Protection In this article, you’ll learn how to make any media DRM free and use it without restrictions like any other file. Not illegally by hacking the DRM encryption technology but making a video or audio DRM free which you already posses legally.

How they Work

None of the DRM removal tools actually remove DRM from original media file but just record the content and create new file. These recording is often faster than traditional recording process which is a result of increased playback speed.

Prerequisite: You have to have legal license of the DRM protected file you wish to convert.

I tried some popular DRM removal tools developed for media files only and decided to write about Aimersoft DRM media converter. Not only, it strips or removes DRM protection from most media files but also convert them to make compatible with your device.

Interface is very straightforward of this tool. Single window gives all essential options along with the preview window.

If you are using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 or if you are following this website regularly, you might be aware of the fact that Microsoft has improved Windows Explorer functionality a lot in these new Windows versions. Microsoft has put options to hide/remove favorites, libraries from Windows Explorer navigation pane in Windows 8/8.1. You can also easily mount ISO and VHD files in Windows 8/8.1 Explorer without using any 3rd party software as mentioned here.

But there are a still few annoyances present in Windows 8/8.1 Explorer such as combined "Devices and drives" group by section, 6 extra folders in Windows Explorer, Details Pane at right instead of bottom, etc.

All of the above mentioned annoyances can be fixed with the help of following tutorials and freeware:

Apart from the above mentioned annoyances, there are 2 other things which many Windows 8/8.1 users complain about. These are "Up button" and Search box in Windows 8/8.1 Explorer.

When Microsoft removed Up button from Windows Explorer in Windows Vista and Windows 7, many people complained about this move and Microsoft decided to put Up button back in Windows 8/8.1 Explorer. But as they say you can't please everyone. Many Windows 8/8.1 users started complaining about no option given to hide or remove Up button from Windows Explorer.

Regarding search box, in Windows 7 you were able to remove search box from Windows Explorer by simply removing Windows Search component using "Programs and Features" in Control Panel but Windows 8/8.1 Explorer don't allow you to remove search box.

Although Windows 8 and 8.1 don't allow you to remove Up button and Search box from Windows Explorer, we are sharing a free and portable tool which will help you in hiding/removing both these things quickly and easily.

"Windows 8.x Explorer Rebar Tweaker" is a small, portable and free software which can be used to remove up button and search box from Windows 8 and 8.1 Explorer. It also allows you to change the padding between addressbar and search box in Windows Explorer as well as customizing back/forward buttons width.

Using this little freeware is very easy. You just need to run its EXE file and it'll start running in background. Now you can run "ConfigurationGUI.exe" file to customize options such as:

Show/hide Up buttonShow/hide Search boxChange Rebar padding (extra space between addressbar and search box)Change navigation buttons (back/forward) width

Apply your changes and close all running Windows Explorer windows. Open Windows Explorer again and you'll see the changes immediately without restarting Explorer process or Windows.

This program stores all settings in an INI file present in the same folder, so you can also modify the INI file to change settings.

There are 2 separate EXE files available of this program for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) Windows editions.

btw how do I move the details pane to bottom without installing anything? also, how to reduce the width of that damned details pane? it's default size is way too much wide and occupies a huge part of the explorer window. I wonder why MS is hell bent on making our life troublesome with these sort of stupid changes with every new edition of windows!

Does this do in memory patching to disable Up button and search box or modify files on the disk?

Hello, Developer of Explorer Rebar Tweaker here.

I don't do any in-memory patching, as that is a bit risky (especially since Windows updates tend to change things that would break tools that patched memory)

Here's the way this tool works:
1. Program sits in background, waiting for an explorer window to be created
2. Program grabs the handle to the window and the toolbar in the window
3. Program hides what is selected/applies padding to that window

Using this method, it allows the user to change the settings without having to restart my program or explorer, just simply open a new window.

You probably read the New York Times piece on US President Obama ordering a slew of cyber attacks against Iran and also the coverage around a new computer worm by the name Flame.

Flame (also known as the Skywiper or Flamer worm) has been out in the wild for an estimated three years. Flamer is made of a number of modules, totalling up to 20 MB in code size. This is five times larger than the typical size of these malware programs.

Flamer collects everything from text, screenshots to voice input data and transmits them in a compressed form to its creators. While Kaspersky has found out that the Flame has affected systems predominantly in the Middle East, you might want to check your computer for the worm and remove it if it does exist.

Thankfully, BitDefender has released a Flame removal tool for both 32 bit and 64 bit computers that detects if your system is infected by the Flamer worm. Download the Flame removal tool from here and run it.

You’ll see a window like the one in the screenshot below open, and you can hit ‘Start Scan’ to make BitDefender check for a Flame infection in your computer.
